Most people believe that preventing and addressing extremism is solely the responsibility of law enforcement agencies and security forces. While these institutions play a critical role in tackling immediate threats, relying solely on them is insufficient for long-term change. It is essential to recognize the importance of the community’s role in eliminating extremism.
Many countries have realized that sustainable and effective results can only be achieved with community support. For instance, Indonesia’s Nahdlatul Ulama organization works tirelessly to promote peace and tolerance while countering extremist ideologies. Similarly, the UK’s Channel Program collaborates with schools, local leaders, and religious institutions to support individuals vulnerable to extremism. These examples demonstrate that working alongside communities yields significant and positive results.
In Pakistan, similar initiatives have been launched. Programs like Peaceful Pakistan focus on promoting dialogue, tolerance, and harmony through media and community engagement. Likewise, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sabaoon project assists individuals who may have been drawn toward extremism for any reason. These programs aim to reintegrate such individuals into society as productive and constructive citizens.
To ensure success in the fight against extremism in Pakistan, there is a need to strengthen communities. Teachers, religious leaders, and members of civil society play a vital role in reshaping extremist narratives and fostering peace. Platforms must be created where people can discuss their concerns and find solutions collectively.
In conclusion, it is incorrect to assume that the fight against extremism is solely the responsibility of the police and security forces. Every citizen has a role to play. By working together, we can create a safer, more peaceful, and prosperous society.
