21st August: International Day of Remembrance and Tribute                               to the Victims of Terrorism

“I have nurtured these flowerbeds with the blood of my heart; Who dares to wrest my garden from me?”

To journey through the valley of grief with a silent pen and a voice rendered speechless by sorrow requires a rare kind of courage. Yet let us take that journey to test the depth of human feeling, to stand close to suffering, and to discover how long the heart can endure when confronted with unbearable loss. There are moments when words lose their power, imagination falters, and even the most eloquent expression falls silent before the magnitude of grief. Behind every tear lies a story of deprivation; behind every sigh, a world forever altered. The true measure of what has been lost can never be calculated, for some losses are far too profound for numbers to comprehend.

Terrorism may be described in terms of incidents, attacks and statistics, but its victims are left to inhabit a world that no statistic can ever adequately describe. When people suffer punishment for a crime they never committed, a wrong they never caused and a sin they never knew, neither language nor imagination can fully convey the devastation within. Bullets, bombs and other instruments of destruction do more than take innocent lives; they shake entire communities and tear apart the social fabric that binds humanity together damage that no passage of time can completely undo. A mother’s arms are left empty. A spouse loses the companion of a lifetime. A child grows up without a father’s protective hand. A sister loses the brother who stood beside her. A family loses its source of strength. A friend loses a trusted confidant. Someone who was cherished becomes an absence that can never be filled.

Behind every victim is a family whose world has been transformed forever. There are homes that wait for footsteps that will never return, families that receive only a devastating message instead of their loved one, and mothers who hold on to photographs, clothes and uniforms, searching for the familiar fragrance of those they have lost. There are dreams abruptly shattered, ambitions left unfinished, livelihoods destroyed, homes emptied, and futures rewritten by a single moment of violence. Some survivors carry physical disabilities; others bear invisible wounds of fear, grief and psychological distress. Prosperity can turn into hardship, laughter into silence, and ordinary moments into lifelong memories of pain. And so, the question remains: Why must this happen? For whose benefit? And for how long?

Every flower that blooms in this garden is precious to its gardener, yet those who travel the paths of hatred and destruction seek to trample every blossom of peace. But history teaches us that those who endure suffering do not necessarily emerge defeated. Those who survive grief, loss and adversity often discover within themselves a deeper courage. They become custodians of the resilience and bravery inherited from those who came before them. The soil watered by the sacrifices of martyrs does not remain barren. From it emerge new generations determined to protect humanity, defend peace and confront those who seek to destroy it. Their resolve is strengthened by faith, patience and perseverance. Their aspirations rise above fear, and their trust in the Almighty gives them the strength to endure what appears impossible. Their sacrifices are not merely acts of courage; they are a commitment to preserving human dignity and securing a future in which life can flourish without the shadow of terror. Pakistan, like many other countries, has endured the devastating consequences of terrorism. Countless innocent people have fallen victim to violence. In the pursuit of their destructive agendas, terrorists have exploited religion, ethnicity, language, color, sectarian and provincial divisions, resources and even the rhetoric of freedom as pretexts for shedding innocent blood. The consequences have extended far beyond the immediate loss of life and property. Individuals and communities have faced psychological trauma, social disruption, economic hardship and profound national and regional challenges. Perhaps the deepest wound has been the erosion of the sense of security the contamination of trust and the disruption of the conditions necessary for development and prosperity. Yet those who gave their lives for peace, those who sacrificed their dreams and those whose loved ones were taken from them must never be allowed to become forgotten names in history.

Their sacrifices demand unity, compassion and collective responsibility. They call upon us to reject hatred, uphold the sanctity of human life and preserve the spirit of sacrifice and solidarity. There is scarcely a village, street or household in Pakistan that has remained untouched by the scourge of terrorism. Every corner of the country bears the memory of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice. Those entrusted with defending the homeland have repeatedly placed the safety of others above their own, confronting terrorism with courage and determination. Millions have been affected directly or indirectly through the loss of loved ones, destruction of property, displacement, economic hardship or psychological trauma. Terrorists have attempted every possible means to destabilize and discredit Pakistan, yet the nation has not been broken. Instead, adversity has repeatedly strengthened the resolve to stand together. Pakistan’s sustained efforts against terrorism and violent extremism have also received recognition from the international community.

The foundations of every fortress of peace are built upon the sacrifices of those who gave their lives to protect it. They cannot and must not be forgotten. Standing beside the victims of terrorism means more than expressing sympathy; it means ensuring that survivors and bereaved families receive dignity, support and opportunities to rebuild their lives. Governments, institutions and communities must continue working together to address their social, economic and psychological needs and to mitigate, as far as possible, the consequences of their loss. No assistance can return a loved one who has departed this world. No compensation can restore the years that were taken away. Yet compassion, dignity, support and meaningful care can help survivors rebuild lives that violence attempted to destroy.

The United Nations has designated 21st August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, providing the world with an opportunity to remember those whose lives were shattered by terrorism and to honor their courage, resilience and sacrifice. This day carries a message that must resonate far beyond ceremonies and commemorations: terrorism will not be allowed to define our future. Every possible effort must be made to defeat the ideologies of hatred and violence, protect innocent lives, strengthen social cohesion and restore and preserve global peace. The true guardian of a garden is one who understands the value of every flower. Likewise, the true defender of humanity is one who recognizes the dignity and worth of every human life. 21st August is therefore not merely a day of remembrance; it is a day of renewed commitment. It reminds us that peace demands courage, unity and perseverance. It calls upon us to honor those who were taken from us not only with words, but through our actions by building societies where hatred is rejected, human life is respected and no family has to endure the unbearable consequences of terrorism again. The blood shed for peace is a debt that can never be repaid. But it can be honored by preserving the peace for which so many gave everything, by standing with those left behind, and by ensuring that the sacrifices of the victims of terrorism are never forgotten.
