On July 20th, a sit-in was organized by the residents of Bannu, a city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that has long been plagued by terrorism. The escalation of violence in the region forced the people onto the streets, demanding decisive action against all armed groups. Among the protestors were those who had directly suffered because of terrorism—people who had lost their loved ones, business owners who had been threatened, and young individuals who had been yearning for a peaceful future free from fear. Bannu is not alone in its suffering; the entire province has experienced a significant rise in militancy over the past few years. Major incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa increased from 56 in 2022 to 82 in 2023, with resultant fatalities rising from 337 in 2022 to 586 in 2023. Of these, Bannu alone recorded 60 fatalities. Facing this escalating violence and disruption, the protestors united with a single demand: to rid their region of terrorism.

Despite the attempts by some miscreants to hijack these protests, the united outcry of Bannu’s residents demonstrated their resolve to free themselves from the grip of terrorists. This plea was a clear indication that terrorists lack support among the general populace. The locals desire nothing more than to rid themselves of the malicious and violent activities of these militants and to live peaceful, progressive lives. This sentiment is also shared by the people in other parts of the country who reject terrorism in any form. The protesters also demanded uniform action against all terrorist groups. This stance clearly shows the public’s belief that all forms of terrorism are unacceptable.
“The government’s Apex committee addressed the protesters’ demands, stating that terrorists are “condemnable in all forms” and that action would be taken against them.”
Responding to public demands, the Bannu police launched a series of coordinated raids on the so-called ‘offices’ of armed groups. They recovered a cache of weapons, seized non-custom paid vehicles, and arrested dozens involved in these illegal activities. As a show of authority, the police paraded the arrested militants before the public, who responded with chants and slogans in support of the law enforcement officials. This display of public appreciation highlighted the community’s clear disapproval of terrorism. The government’s Apex committee addressed the protesters’ demands, stating that terrorists are “condemnable in all forms” and that action would be taken against them.
