Syed Ahmad Shah better known by his pen name Ahmed Faraz, was born on January 12, 1931 in Kohat.

He got his early education from Kohat and later went to Peshawar for higher education. Ahmad Faraz obtained his Masters’s in Urdu and Persian from Peshawar University. He began his career as a producer in Radio Pakistan. Later, he worked as a lecturer at Islamia College, Peshawar.

He also served on senior positions of administrative nature which include Resident Director of Pakistan National Centre, Director of Pakistan Academy of Letters, Lok Virsa and Chairperson of National Book Foundation.  

Ahmad Faraz has several published collections of poems to his credit. His first collection of poetry “Tanha Tanha” was published when he was in graduation. The other include Dard-e-Aashob, Janan Janan, Shubkhoon, Merey Khwab Reza Reza, Beaawara Gali Koochon Mein, Nabeena Shehr Mein Aaeena, and Khwab-e-Gul Pareshan Hai. His Kulliyat appeared with an inclusive title of Shahr-e-Sukhan Aaraasta Hai. His literary work has been translated into Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Macedonian, Russian and Swedish languages.

The great Urdu poet was decorated with a number of national and international awards including the Nagar Award, Adam Jee Literary Award, Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz. 

Ahmed Faraz breathed his last on this day 25th August 2008 and was buried in Islamabad.
